Piper Turbo Lance III och Lance III
Jag hajade till efter en stund efter jag sett bilden: Dessa två Piper PA-32R har T-tail men den "nya" vingen och har målningsschema som tyder på årsmodell 1980. Har Piper Saratoga - som ersatte Piper Six och Piper Lance 1980 - alltså funnits med T-tail?! Det närmaste flygplanet bär registrering N20816 och det bortre N9223C. Man kan även notera texten Piper Turbo Lance III på N20816 och Piper Lance III på N9223C.

In early 1978 Piper started to develop the Lance III and Turbo Lance III which was the Lance II with semi-tapered wing and larger stabilator (35 inches wider than the Lance II and the same size as the orginal Lance) on the T-tail. The PA-32RT-301 prototype with a 300 hp Lycoming IO-540-K1G5D engine was s/n 32R-8013001 registration N9223C. This flew on the 3rd of November 1978 and was converted from 32R-7885037.
The PA-32RT-301T prototype s/n 32R-8029001 registration N20816 was converted from s/n 32R-7887178 and first flew on the 29th of January 1979. During the summer Piper tried to improve the spin characteristics by putting wing tip end-plates on aircraft N9223C. The PA-32RT-301T was actually certfied on the 16th of August 1979. Later in 1979, Piper decided that they would like to use the same tail across the PA-32 / 32R range, resulting in the new low-tailed (and reduced span ailerons) Saratoga series.
N9223C and N20816 were converted to low tails, thus becoming the PA-32R-301 Saratoga SP (SP stands for Special Performance) and the PA-32R-301T Turbo Saratoga SP respectively. Aircraft N9223C first flew with the low tail on the 1st of October 1979. The two Saratoga SP's received FAA approval on the 7th November 1979. This change was made after Piper hde put the two Lance III models into production and a total of 35 finished and unfished aircraft had to be converted to low-tail configuration / Saratoga SP in the last few moths of 1979. Deliveries from Vero Beach commenced with s/n 32R-8013002 registration N2880W and s/n 32R-8029002 registration N2422U in early 1980. The Saratoga SP sold for USD 80,200 in standard form.
Ovanstående bild, släppt av Pipers PR-avdelning 1979, är alltså lite unik. Piper Lance III kom aldrig ut på marknaden. Detta med T-tail på Pipers flygplantyper var en modenyck i slutet av 70-talet - man ville profilera sig. Först ut var den då nya PA-38 Tomahawk 1978. Samma år kom Piper Lance II som alltså hade T-tail och året därpå Piper Arrow IV med samma sak.
Det blev två årsmodeller av Piper Lance II, och Lance III kom som sagt aldrig ut på marknaden.
